PERFORMANCE 1

SQUAD CRITERIA

1. SWIMMING COMPETENCE
To join this squad a swimmer must be able to perform:

  • Swim England competitions, obtaining at least County Qualifying Time and London Regional Qualifying Time (available on the website for consultation) in multiple events.
  • Full commitment and hard work, with potential to qualify for the London Region Championship and National Age Group Championships.
  • Regular training in order to handle an average of 5,000/7,000 metres per 2 hours session.

These criteria serve as guidance*. Coaches expect the right attitude and commitment from swimmers already in this squad or swimmers wishing to join this squad who are fully committed to team ethos, and goals (individual and team), to be on time and fully prepared for all sessions and competitions (training gear, water bottle, team kit etc).

2. COMMITMENT

Training: Time available 14.5 hours (7 sessions) per week.
Minimum weekly commitment is 5 x pool sessions.
Competitions: As this is the top squad of the club, swimmers are expected to compete and represent BSC at all team events, such as National Age Group Championships, Regional & County Championships, Level 1 & Level 2 Licensed Open Meets, Club Championships, National Arena Swimming League and other Inter Club Swim Leagues.IAPS or other school galas are not part of the Swim England programme, so they will not be considered.

Swimmers not attending (below 60%) or competing regularly will continue their activity with JPD or SPD.

3. AGE
Girls and Boys 12 & OVER.

4. AIMS AND ASPIRATIONS
Swimmers are expected to achieve success at both county and regional levels and to have the aspiration to gain national qualifying times and compete at national events. The main objective for Performance 1 swimmers is to qualify in all events for Surrey County Championships and qualify with at least four different strokes and two different distances for London Region Championships. A more individual approach allows the coach to work closely with the swimmers and maximises swimmers' opportunity to reach their potential in the long term. A strong work ethic is essential with a serious attitude towards achieving personal success: the sport becomes a “lifestyle” choice.

*Any exceptions to the criteria need to be discussed and agreed with the coaches and will be at their discretion. Swimmers who excel in one particular stroke and are not able to achieve all the criteria may be considered but is at the discretion of the coach.
